Prostate Volume Study

What is it?

A volume study is an ultrasound study of your prostate.
We use these pictures to determine the exact size and shape of the gland.
Pictures or images of the prostate are taken and used to design each patient's individualized treatment plan.
At the conclusion of the volume study, the radiation
oncologist will decide if you are a candidate for seed implantation.
Preparing for the volume study
You will receive bowel preparation
instructions prior to your volume study appointment. The quality
of the volume study is dependent upon strict adherence to these
instructions.
What to expect
When you arrive at the center, a staff member will greet you and bring you to the volume study suite. At this time, you will need to change into a gown.
For the volume study, you must lie on your back with your legs placed in stirrups. Please inform us if you have a history of back surgery, back problems or knee or hip replacements.
To visualize your urethra, a urinary catheter will be placed into your bladder. Then, an ultrasound probe will be inserted into your rectum. The probe is the instrument that visualizes the prostate gland.
Once all pictures have been taken, the catheter and probe are removed. Total time for this study is approximately 10-15 minutes, although your visit may take up to an hour.
You will be given a written prescription for antibiotics as a preventative measure against infection from catheterization. Patients occasionally experience some very slight burning with urination and the urine may be blood-tinged. These symptoms are directly related to catheterization and should resolve within 24 hours.
After your volume study is complete and the results are analyzed, you and your physician will make a choice regarding your course of treatment.
If you are a candidate for the seed implant and you have decided on this course of treatment, we will do an EKG and obtain bloodwork for your pre-op testing.
It is likely that approximately three weeks will elapse before everything is ready for your implant.
IMPORTANT!
Based on your medical history, you may be asked to obtain medical clearance or test reports from your primary physician before undergoing seed implantation.
It is extremely important that we receive all requested documents one to two weeks prior to your seed implant appointment. Please obtain a copy of any EKG and stress test performed within the last 5 years and bring them with you the day of the volume study.
